István Korponai – Wandering for Nothing
„What is the world to me…?”
Light, abundance, wine,
The swelling tide, the dance.
**
And how many silent gods and demons
Attach themselves
To the burden of human being.
**
Dear Icarus – do you see it still?
What is this earth,
But a whispering flight
Upon wings of our own making?
**
The island is but stone,
The mighty river fed by a little stream;
And what a clown's jest,
This thing we call human life.
**
The weak have become monstrous!
O Lord of Hosts!
Its depths, its indifference, its excess –
A Dionysian feast.
**
There shall be no law –
Or else the Law shall be
The No.
This army craves a tyrant;
To set them singing,
A guilty god is needed –
One whom they neither wish
Nor dare
To overcome.
István Korponai – The Rain Washes Away All
When winter comes, I shall grow out my beard,
And in its tangled branches hide
My fears, my sorrow, and my songs,
Then cast them to the roaring river of Time
Like frozen scales of ice.
Thereafter I shall shape a handful of snow,
And knead into it my burning longing,
My love, and all my dreams.
Into its heart
I shall let fall a drop of my blood
And a tear from my eye.
And when the springtime melts it all away,
Life shall awaken once again
May the colors of the rainbow shine for you,
In place of sorrow's dark and mournful cloud.István Korponai – The Lost Orpheus
Let us keep love within our hearts
Until our legs at last collapse,
Like rotted stalks of corn,
Frozen, lifeless,
Bowed to the earth.
*
Pain, hope, desire –
Their voices mingle
With the restless wandering wind.
*
You have no hope of happiness!
Fate and destiny inscribe your life,
Though your soul be clear as a blue mirror,
Pure as the stillness of a quiet lake.
*
Deep and lofty furrows
Are carved upon your heart;
They dreamed of the sea.
They dreamed of the sea.
*
Let us listen
To how feeble truth has grown
Upon this spinning globe.
Life – Affliction is your name.
*
Seeking purification,
I gave my heart
To a cold mountain.
*
To a cold mountain crowned with snow,
To silence,
To eyes of stars,
To the comet
That guides the mariner home.
*
Unspeakably bitter
Has every gesture become.
Yet–
*
Let us carve love
Into the depths of our hearts.
Though you must know–
Whoever you may be–
Happiness was never granted
István Korponai – If Yet Again
The sky turns blue from lovers' eyes,
Bestowing sunlight on the hills below.
The wind moves softly through their hair,
And carries far away
The thoughts that shimmer beneath their brows.
**
How much longing! How many dreams!
From their chiming words I weave a tapestry of love,
And like a stolen spell
I graft new buds upon the trees
Where frost and snow still reign today.
**
Let me become a cascade of light,
A blessed bell made holy by the hand of God,
Joyfully beating out its rhythm with its heart.
For here upon the earth,
At times–at blessed times–
There is still love,
And there is peace.
**
The sky turns blue from lovers' eyes,
While creation itself remains
A fragile, wild, and sorrow–laden night.
**
If once more I were born upon this earth,
Let the northern wind drive me onward,
Let the sunlight shine upon my way,
That I might become
The song of flourishing women in love,
Softly hummed
With a smile.
